Threats of road closures over Easter as truck drivers prepare to strike

Transport minister Blade Nzimande says he hopes a planned protest by truck drivers will not take place as they have been in talks with associations representing drivers since January.

Major national roads will potentially be inaccessible with threats of road closures by truck drivers over the employment of foreign drivers.

Nzimande says a task team made of five departments, including home affairs, was set up earlier this year to address this and other grievances. A report was submitted two weeks ago with the promise to meet stakeholders at the end of this month.

This is a labour dispute, so we are quite concerned as to why when we are in the middle of discussions there is this threat.

Blade Nzimande, Transport minister

They are negotiating in bad faith because we have agreed on a process on what needs to be done. I told them they have no business blocking my highways because this is a labour dispute. They are complaining about the employment of foreign nationals; this is a matter that they should be taking up in the collective bargaining council.

Blade Nzimande, Transport minister

They must take action in their depots where these trucks actually pick up stuff.

Blade Nzimande, Transport minister

Nzimande says the department only took up the matter because they thought it was important to assist in finding a resolution.

If they do so, there is another intention behind this which is economic sabotage of the country; even more serious is to disrupt the millions of South Africans who are moving [travelling].

Blade Nzimande, Transport minister

Nzimande says law-enforcement authorities plan to arrest those disrupting the flow of traffic and will impound their vehicles.
