'R120 million to be spent on presidential inauguration is too exorbitant'

R120 million

The DA claims the figure is contained in a document presented to the sixth parliament transition team.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says an amount of R 120 million supposedly set to be spent on this year's presidential inauguration is exorbitant considering the economic situation South Africa finds itself in.

The 2019 inauguration will be moving from the Union Buildings to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.

While the presidency has yet to confirm this, DA's Chief Whip John Steenhuisen says the figures for the event are contained in a document that was presented to the sixth parliament transition team.

According to Steenhuisen, the document sets out a variety of costs associated with the inauguration and swearing in of members of parliament.

We are heavily burdened under debt, 10 million South Africans have joined the unemployment queue and we have got far too many South Africans living without basic services.

John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip - DA

That money could rather be spent on providing a lasting legacy of service delivery, infrastructure or items that would really make life better.

Speaking on the move to Loftus, Steenhuisen says it is going to come at a massive cost.

We really need to start cutting down on the amount of money we spend on these grand public fashion parade jamborees. Bare in mind, this year we will not only be paying for the inauguration but two Sonas ( State of the Nation Address)

John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip - DA

Producers of the John Maytham Show were unable to get hold of the presidency for confirmation.
