'Ramaphosa's admission that the ANC enabled state capture is not good enough'

President Cyril Ramaphosa has admitted that members of the African African National Congress (ANC) were responsible for and allowed state capture to happen in the country.

Ramaphosa made these remarks while addressing a gathering in Lynwood, Pretoria on Monday.

Before the state was captured, it was the ANC that was captured. Yes, as the Zondo Commission unfolds, clarity will become more apparent on that.

Cyril Ramaphosa, President

They targeted state institutions and quickly they found a way through utilising some of the people within our ranks. Something that we have admitted, and let me immediately say I don't think you can hear many political parties admitting their errors, their missteps, their mistakes and all that like the ANC does.

Cyril Ramaphosa, President

The ANC has been brave enough to admit that and that is one of the things that is going to begin to make our renewal project much easier.

[Watch] David Makhura speaks to Eusebius McKaiser

What Cyril Ramaphosa said last night is similar to what David Makhura said on this show, which is this narrative of yes, sure we stuffed up, but we are the first to admit it.

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

That logic is just not good enough, and I don't want you to admit that you have done wrong, I want you to not harm me in the first place.

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

The consequences of the wrongdoing are deep inequality, a country that has an economic growth level that is around 0.7%, institutions that are hollowed out and will take at least a generation to fix even if the likes of DD Mabuza and Ace Magashule were to disappear in a puff of magic.

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

The consequences of the lost opportunities of the last 25 years in particular state capture including the capture of the ANC which was a spectacular admittance by the president last night, saying but how many parties would admit their mistakes. So what?

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

It is like your lover cheating on you, beating you up and saying baby I am the first one to admit it and I am responsible for the black eye that you have this morning, but how many people would agree that they beat you up?

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

It is just not good enough because the consequences of beating up your lover are such that they will for a very long time wear the scars physically and emotionally.

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

The scars by analogy that you and I will have to settle with for a long time are a compromised criminal justice system that was captured and intelligent structures that we can't trust.

Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter

He says Ramaphosa's admittance is like an abusive lover admitting that they were the first to do the beating, but at least, they have the guts to accept it and that doesn't sit well with him.
