Training programmes for unemployed launched in Western Cape

As in the rest of the country, the unemployment rate in the Western Cape is a source of serious concern.

The Department of Labour's Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is now launching a training programme in partnership with selected training institutions to accommodate close to 5 000 unemployed people.

UIF director of communications and marketing Makhosonke Buthelezi says the programme is part of a national initiative launched in KwaZulu-Natal two weeks ago.

Close to a total of 5 000 learners are going to be trained in various skills programmes.

What we are trying to do is to re-integrate those people who have been contributing to UIF and who are unemployed and indicated that they are still available if there are training opportunities or future employment opportunities.

Buthelezi says the opportunity is not limited to people registered with the UIF, but notes that in the Western Cape the majority of these beneficiaries do fall within the youth category.

Some of the partnering training institutions have already started the recruitment process, drawing on the Labour Department's database.
