Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa's Grant Masterson unpacks the safety measures provided for the officials.

With 8 May just 6 days away, the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) state of readiness for the elections is in the spotlight.

The Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa has dispatched international observers to South Africa to monitor the upcoming polls.

However, media reports have reflected fears of xenophobic attacks against these African officials.

The Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa' s senior manager of governance institutions and political processes, Grant Masterson joins 702's Bongani Bingwa to talk about these issues.

It is something that we don't take seriously in this country is our image on the continent. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is an organisation that draws its observers from our SADC neighbour states, and they will all see the stories of Malawians attacked in KwaZulu-Natal.

And they don't always believe that the response of the South African government is hard enough. They feel quite let down by South Africans in general and continuously ask if South Africans don't remember the role African countries played in the struggle.

Masterson maintains, however, that South Africa provides a peaceful and secure environment for the election observers.

He says a lot of work goes into making sure that these SADC representatives can do their work effectively.
