Flu season: 'Now is the time to be vaccinated'

Flu season is just starting, raising the question of whether you should have yourself vaccinated, and if so, when.

Dr Lucille Bloomberg from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says people should definitely opt for this preventative measure and reminds us of the unpleasant symptoms of influenza.

Influenza's got high fever, usually sudden onset, severe muscle pain, sore throat, dry cough and headache.

Anybody who wants to reduce their risks of influenza and obviously complications which we do see in specific groups (should get vaccinated).

Dr Bloomberg singles out pregnant women, people with underlying medical conditions and those that have any problems with their immune system among the at-risk groups.

Pregnant women must be vaccinated. They are most at risk of complications, particularly pneumonia and it can be very severe pneumonia... It'll also protect the newborn when they are also at risk of influenza.

The second group would be those with underlying medical conditions for example asthma, diabetes, any chronic lung problems, heart problems, kidneys...

Dr Lucille Bloomberg, National Institute for Communicable Diseases

Dr Bloomberg says there are currently enough stocks of the vaccine and advises people to take advantage of this.

Now is the time to be vaccinated.
