2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

We have never met with former president Jacob Zuma - ATM

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has denied the involvement of former president Jacob Zuma in the party's formation as part of a plot to challenge the ANC.

ATM president Vuyo Zungula says he was in every meeting concerning the party and Zuma was never part of those meetings.

The allegations emerged over the weekend when the Sunday Times reported that an affidavit by the general secretary of the South African Council of Messianic Churches in Christ (SACMCC) Buyisile Ngqulwana has mentioned Zuma as a key player in ATM's formation.

We launched the party last year in September and in everything we've done there's never been a 'hands-off Zuma' or any of those slogans.

In our manifesto, there is no radical economic transformation. Our manifesto has our own identity and it is not linked to former president Zuma whatsoever.

ATM is a political party that is working very hard and it is attracting many people and anyone who wants to destroy the image of the party has to come up with such allegations.

Zungula alleges that the person who is making these claims is working with the ANC to tarnish the name of ATM.

He says the party has taken a stance to be neither for or against former president Zuma.

We are a political party that is formed to focus on the needs of South Africans. We are not focused on an individual.

By focusing on an individual, we are not solving the problems that are faced by many South Africans.
