EFF's Shivambu misled Parliament by not disclosing income streams - journalist

According to AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Deputy President Floyd Shivambu might have lied to Parliament in 2017 when he said his only salary was from the National Assembly.

The centre says a series of WhatsApp and SMSes between Shivambu and businessman Lawrence Mulaudzi show that Shivambu used his position to benefit financially.

To unpack this story, 702' Bongani Bingwa speaks to AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism's investigative journalist Susan Comrie.

We can see evidence from WhatsApp messages exchanged with Mulaudzi which indeed suggest that Shivambu was asking for what he terms interventions.

Susan Comrie, Investigative journalist - AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism

The context of the messages suggests that what he is asking for is money - in one instance he provides bank details for his brother's company Grand Azania which you would recall featured quite prominently in the VBS saga.

Susan Comrie, Investigative journalist - AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism

We look into his bank accounts and see what exactly went in there and what went into Grand Azania and where he benefitted? ...It suggests that he is benefiting in some way and he is not disclosing that to the National Assembly.

Susan Comrie, Investigative journalist - AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism

She says everyone keeps finding pieces to a puzzle suggesting that Grand Azania was there to benefit Floyd Shivambu and not just his brother.

R6.2m from VBS flowed through another company into Grand Azania, she claims.

We need to carry on digging, but it looks like there is a problem there.
