[LISTEN] Former IEC chair warns winning party against failure to fulfil promises

Pansy Tlakula says she was committed to having an organisation that was respected throughout the world and on the continent.

Former chair of the Electoral Commission of South Africa and current chairperson of the Information Regulator Pansy Tlakula is one of many South Africans who have cast their votes.

Tlakula was appointed to the position in 2011 and resigned after the public protector found that she had flouted procurement regulations in securing a lease for the IEC offices in Centurion which saw her fail to complete her seven-year term.

Political parties and Judge Johan Kriegler maintained, however, that her error was an administrative blunder and not an act of corruption.

Looking back at her contribution to the institution as well as democracy, Tlakula says she was committed to having an organisation that was respected throughout the world and on the continent.

We were able to achieve that.

Pansy Tlakula, Former chair of the IEC

I come from a human rights background so the the small contribution that I made was to ensure that we prepare for the management of elections and do so from a human rights perspective because the right to vote is one of the important rights in the constitution.

Pansy Tlakula, Former chair of the IEC

On building a democracy amid the apparent divisions in South African politics, Tlakula says she would like to see the winning party improve the lives of citizens.

We cannot continue to make promises every five years that we are not delivering because people get tired.
