2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

Election results 'largely stable' with ANC leading at 56%, FF+ support growing

As election results continue to trickle in on Thursday, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is sitting at below 60%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

With 37% of voting districts captured so far, EWN's Barry Bateman says the figures have remained relatively stable.

We've got the ANC sitting at 56%, the DA with 24% and the EFF behind them at 8.9%.

While all eyes are on the major parties, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) numbers are also worth watching, says Bateman.

The party is sitting at 2.9% of the national vote, showing significant growth.

He points out that the FF+ secured a total of 165 000 votes in the 2014 elections and this time round, with just over a third of votes counted, it's already at 158 000 votes.

It's interesting that there appear to be voters moving across to the Freedom Front Plus.

In the hotly-contested province of Gauteng, the ANC has passed the halfway mark at 50.3% with the DA in second with 27%.

Bateman says the EFF is increasing its support, standing at 14%.

The DA is holding onto its lead in the Western Cape at 55%, with the ANC trying to catch up at 28%.
