Cape Town's R2,7million "jetvac" truck to unblock storm water drains

Winter rains notoriously cause stormwater drain blockages in the Mother City which leads to slippery roads.

Hundreds of complaints are received monthly.

The R2.7 million 'jet vac' truck has been procured to help solve the problem for the City's rental stock.

Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Malusi Booi talks to Kieno Kammies about its new machine.

We have received more than 250 complaints per month and so decided to make this investment. It is a good long-term investment...we will no longer need guys using rods to unblock the drains.

Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements - City of Cape Town

He says this will make the job quicker and more efficient.

Our priority was no one would lose any job, and we have guaranteed that.

Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements - City of Cape Town

He says it is to primarily assist with the City's rental stock, but where possible will help other departments.

Booi appeals to citizens not to throw foreign objects down the drains.

They have other means to dump things, but not in our stormwater pipes.

Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements - City of Cape Town

He says this new truck will speed up turnaround time of complaints.
