'Don't isolate Ramaphosa from the collective work of the ANC' - Ace Magashule

African National Congress secretary-general Ace Magashule says media should not isolate President Cyril Ramaphosa from the party as a collective.

Speaking to Joanne Joseph about the party's election results on Friday evening, Magashule emphasised the efforts of supporters, volunteers and branches of the ANC, saying Ramaphosa simply propelled the campaign.

His response comes amid perceptions that the president is the party's supposed saving grace.

People have voted the ANC, people and media should not try and isolate comrade Cyril Ramaphosa from the collective. He did not campaign alone. Branches, communities, fans and supporters have done even more than the leadership of the ANC, on the ground.

Ace Magashule, Secretary-general - ANC

Ramapahsoa has propelled like many other presidents, our campaign, the face is actually the face of the president and the president energises the campaign even are better and more.

Ace Magashule, Secretary-general - ANC

Don't take Cyril Ramaphosa out of the collective.

Magashule says the party is 'better' after Nasrec and has dismissed what he insists is the media narrative that he is working against Ramaphosa.

I will never work against an elected president of the ANC. The way I have been schooled in the culture and traditions of the ANC, the president is the leader. There is no way I will not like President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ace Magashule, Secretary-general - ANC

Speaking to Eyewitness News earlier on Friday evening, ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula told reporter Clement Manayathela that Magashule needs to understand Ramaphosa is the president of the ANC and was a game changer for the party.

Joanne spoke to Mbalula himself.

Providing clarity on their varying views Mbalula says Magashule may be articulating a matter of principle.

I think the SG, what he is articulating is a principle, that don't isolate the president from the ANC. But that is not the issue. When we analyse factors that propelled the ANC to this 9 million who have voted for us, among others, the dominant feature of that is its president.

Fikile Mbalula, Head of elections - ANC

He says however the euphoria around an ANC president is nothing new.

We have had that with Mandela - the Mandela factor or Mandela euphoria, we have had it with all our presidents. Ramaphosa stood out when the ANC was faced with huge challenges and perceptions that the ANC is tolerant to corruption and mishandling the economy.

Fikile Mbalula, Head of elections - ANC

The president was a factor and indeed a game changer for us.
