ANC NEC expected to discuss Magashule and Mbalula's 'divisive' views

The African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee has started its first post-2019 election meeting in Irene just outside Pretoria on Monday afternoon, where it will discuss its performance during the elections, among other issues.

The national working committee has completed its meeting during which it has decided on a list of candidates for the premiership in the eight provinces where the ruling party has retained power.

Eyewitness News reporter Clement Manytahlea says the NEC will now take on the final decision.

Among other issues expected to be discussed is a public disagreement between secretary-general Ace Magashule and elections head Fikile Mbalula's on President Cyril Ramaphosa's impact on the party's winnings.

Magashule recently rubbished comments that the party was rescued by Ramaphosa in the 2019 national and provincial elections.

It will deal with the performance of the ANC in this year's elections but also touch on the public spat we have seen between senior ANC leaders like Mbalula and Magashule because they have been disagreeing on whether President Cryril Ramaphosa was actually the reason why the party did not slip below 50%.

I think another senior NEC member of the ANC, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, was telling the Sowetan newspaper that she also feels that the comment by Mbalula was actually divisive; so it will be interesting to see the views expressed in the NEC meeting...

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance is expected to hold a media briefing after its federal executive (FedEx) meeting.

Manyathela says DA leader Mmusi Maimane is not part of the individuals expected to brief the media.

I have covered a lot of DA briefings after the FedEx and Mmusi Maimane normally would be available.
