The Democratic Alliance (DA) federal chairperson Athol Trollip says the party takes collective responsibility for the election results.
The DA federal executive held its meeting on Monday to reflect on the party's election performance.
Trollip discusses the outcome with Africa Melane on 702 Breakfast.
The meeting was robust, it was honest, and there was a lot of introspection. We had a bad election and to go back by 1% is a bad election, we wanted to grow, we didn't grow, therefore we all took responsibility for that.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
We had a presidential candidate and we had nine premier candidates and all of us worked very hard on the election and we were not able to show the growth we wanted to. So, it was a good meeting and it was not centred around Mmusi Maimane's position because we were all in unison that he would lead us until the next congress.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
He is our leader, he has been appointed by members of the DA and he will stay that way until the next congress and I believe he will be re-elected at that congress.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
Trollip attributes the election results to the fact that the DA's message didn't resonate with the voters the way they expected it to do.
There were internal issues that affected us in the build-up to this election for the last year. We had many internal problems that we had to deal with in the public eye that didn't reflect the DA as a party that was entirely together and united. That is something that we will have to look at in the future.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
He says the party believes that it is a good thing to do introspection after every election and they are doing that now.
We are going to go to all nine provinces, and the leader will do a listening tour to meet people inside and outside the party to get their insights into how the DA can do better.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
We are still the second biggest party in South Africa and we are also a party of government. We are a party of government and we must compare ourselves with the other governing party. We believe we can become a government in South Africa and in order to do that we will have to do things differently.— Athol Trollip, Federal chairperson - DA
