The African National Congress Youth League in eThekwini has called on the resignation of Mayor Zandile Gumede.
Gumede was granted bail of R50,000 after she made a brief appearance in the Durban Regional Commercial Crimes Court.
Gumede and two others face corruption charges, including money laundering and racketeering linked to an irregular R208 million tender in 2016.
Regional spokesperson for ANC Youth League eThekwini region Thulisa Ndlela says while she is innocent until proven guilty, there are three reasons why she should step down.
If you look at the seriousness of the charges, the charges are so serious that if found guilty, they carry anything more than 15 years. It is expected upon whoever is accused to dedicate the full portion of their time in so far as defending themselves.— Thulisa Ndlela, Regional spokesperson - ANC Youth League eThekwini region
The bail conditions makes it impossible for comrade Gumede to function in her job as mayor. Then the last reason is the protection of the image of the organisation.— Thulisa Ndlela, Regional spokesperson - ANC Youth League eThekwini region
It is not vindictive, it is just a matter of where we are, we need to restore the confidence of the people in the ANC.— Thulisa Ndlela, Regional spokesperson - ANC Youth League eThekwini region
Ndlela says the organisation has made their views known to her.
