A dedicated security and assistance service was recently created with truckers in mind, and already they have had to help out.

Claudia Carvalho, owner, and director of Hawkeye Trucker Assist speaks to CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson about the service on offer.

Carvalho says it offers security assistance to truckers.

Should a driver feel he is coming up to an unsafe area, he then informs us and we then arrange the escort through the area until he then feels safe.

Drivers would have to notify the company about expected times of arrival in hotspots as it does require preparation, she says.

We would then be there quite a bit before so that we can find out what is going on around there.

In the event of a breakdown, Hawkeye Trucker dispatches a team to the truck and driver to ensure no looting takes place.

She says the company does have a nationwide footprint which enables them to get to breakdown incidents quickly.

The company has been operating for a few months and says it has had a number of call-outs that have been successfully resolved.

The company says it is planning a visit to the De Doorns area to help come up with a plan to assist drivers.

We cannot just leave things as they are.
