The eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede, and her co-accused are fighting to clear their names.
The mayor and two others face corruption charges, including money laundering and racketeering, linked to an irregular R208 million tender in 2016.
Gumede and ANC Youth League (ANCYL) regional deputy secretary, Mondli Mthembu, handed themselves over to the Hawks on Tuesday.
But some ANC members are calling for the mayor to step down.
Nickolaus Bauer discussed the implications with political analyst, Dr Sethulego Matebesi, on the Xolani Gwala Show.
Corruption is a huge elephant that will never go away from the ANC; the party has been complacent and has ignored warning signals. If you look at the outcome of the elections, the trajectory shows support by the electorate, but you cannot have severe allegations against any party member.— Dr Sethulego Matebesi, Political analyst
Matebesi accused the ANC of dragging its heels.
The ANC keeps promising that they are serious about corruption, but they have delegated work to institutions instead of doing the work themselves.— Dr Sethulego Matebesi, Political analyst
He says the party needs to take a firm stance with this case.
I am not surprised by some ANC members calling for her to step down. But at the end of the day, the party needs to do an introspection.— Dr Sethulego Matebesi, Political analyst
