UJ designs mobile laboratory to test water in disaster areas

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has designed a mobile laboratory to cut the hours spent transporting samples from contaminated water in disaster areas.

The laboratory on wheels operates on solar panels allowing you to park it wherever there is sunshine.

UJ's Water and Health Research Centre director Professor Tobias Barnard says the 4-6 hours used to travel back and forth can now be used to test and determine the source of contamination in the water.

We can also start giving guidence on how the water should be treated and test of the treatments are working on.

Professor Tobias Barnard, Director - UJ Water and Health Research Centre

We started with the concept in 2007 but it was fast-tracked in 2017. We had our first one last year, tested it and now it is available.

We are excited because we can now take the mobile laboratory anywhere and do more detailed studies onsite. There are no more time limitations and we can go to rural areas where we do not have to worry about accommodation because the mobile laboratory comes with tents.

Professor Tobias Barnard, Director - UJ Water and Health Research Centre

Our dream is to set up a network of these laboratories all over the country to do real-time monitoring of water.
