60 year-old Corrie la Grange has been turned away from 10 hospitals and by a number of doctors who say that they cannot accomodate a man of his size.
La Grange suffers from a rare medical condition that has caused fluid to build up around his vital organs, his story came to light this afternoon when EWN picked up the story of EMS services struggling to decide how they would transport a 450kg patient to Charlotte Maxeke hospital for treatment.
Speaking to 702's Xolani Gwala on Afternoon Drive, la Grange's partner Charmaine Rademeyer explained that la Grange's illness makes it impossible for him sit up and lie down without him having difficulty breathing.
She further explained la Grange's condition saying:
This thing has been coming for the last 3 months, he was very well until the end of March. He started telling me that he was gaining weight and he can't understand why because he's not eating that much ... I could see that he was getting bigger, not gaining weight because if you look at his arms, his arms are very small compared to the rest of his body and his backside is very small. It started with his painful legs and feet, making it difficult for him to walk...— Corrie la Grange's partner, Charmaine Rademeyer
Rademeyer carried on to say that it has been impossible for medical practitioners to help la Grange because their equipment is not adequate to assist someone of his size.
According to Rademeyer La Grange has reached an impossible weight of 450kgs over the past 3 months and the family is currently waiting to find out if he can recieve help at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
