Univille residents threaten shutdown over illegal land grabs

A small group of Lenasia South residents have taken to the streets and are threatening a shutdown over land grabs.

The residents from Univille demanded to speak to Gauteng Human Settlement MEC Uhuru Moiloa on Thursday but were unable to.

Chairperson of the Lenasia South Residents Association, Joy Govender, says they have had numerous engagements with local government and political parties yet nothing has been done.

She says they have tried a number of other channels and handed over a memorandum of grievances to the Johannesburg mayoral committee last year without feedback.

We have given them timeframes. When we initially gave Herman Mashaba our memorandum, we gave him two months. We have given the MEC. On the 12th of December, they said they would get back to us, still, nothing has been done. They do not respond to our WhatsApps or phone calls.

We have got the land invasion directly across us so we have decided we are going to camp here until they move.

The community is now very frustrated. We have land invaders that come into our areas and threaten us at gunpoint.

Joy Govender, Chairperson - Lenasia South Residents Association

Govender says people came into the area, occupied the land in October 2016 and invaded the region.

There was no order; they just came in, put up their shacks and started living.
