Dion Chang can spot a trend a mile away (and made doing so his business)

Dion Chang is one of South Africa’s most celebrated trend analysts.

His early career included stints as a make-up artist before moving into fashion styling.

His trends analysis company Flux Trends specialises in tracking shifting social dynamics and consumer mind-sets.

And he regularly contributes to various print and online publications as a freelance journalist and social commentator.

Politics, fashion, food – they’re all interrelated and you have to look at the whole 360 degrees before forming an opinion.

I never really fitted in anywhere. In Paris, when I said I’m South African, they said it was impossible. In Hong Kong I didn’t fit in because, despite what I look like, I didn’t speak the language. In Pretoria during Apartheid I also didn’t fit in. I always had to fill in ‘Other’ on forms!

Dion Chang

Social trends that shape fashion is what I’m into right now. I have an inherent curiosity about the world. My business card merely says ‘Observer’.

Dion Chang

There is no scientific method when it comes to me spotting a trend.

Dion Chang

Dion Chang

When I started out trends weren’t trendy and now they are.
