[LISTEN] Medical aid schemes to be probed for racial profiling, intimidation

The Council for Medical Schemes is initiating a probe into the conduct of medical aids accused of racial discrimination as well as intimidation.

Black private medical practitioners say they are struggling to get paid for services they provide to medical aid clients and believe the difficulty may be because of racism.

Several medical aid schemes including Medscheme and Discovery have been embroiled in the allegations.

The council has briefed the media after the National Health Care Professionals Association asked the council for medical schemes for a commission of inquiry into the payment methods of medical aids schemes.

The association's chairperson, Dr Donald Gumede, says the schemes have 'hijacked' services rendered to patients.

The bone of contestation is that these medical aids use bullying tactics to extort money from healthcare professionals.

Dr Donald Gumede, Chairperson - National Health Care Professionals Association

They will call you and say please hand us the files of your patients which is illegal because that is confidential information, failure to which they stop your payments and say we are not going to pay you until you give us the files. That is bullying.

Dr Donald Gumede, Chairperson - National Health Care Professionals Association

Call any black healthcare professional and ask them if they have never encountered this bullying, they will tell you they have.

Dr Donald Gumede, Chairperson - National Health Care Professionals Association

Gumede believes they are looking for a reason not to pay the claims. He says the association simply wants to root out wrongdoing in the health industry.
