Zuma has filed his heads of argument in which his legal team has provided at least 164 pages outlining its basis for the permanent stay application.

The former president's lawyer has applied to make his opening statement in IsiZulu.

702 Bongani Bingwa speaks to Tiso Black Star specialist reporter Karyn Maughan about the upcoming court case.

My understanding is that the lawyer's application to make the opening statement in isiZulu will be granted and I think it is not going to be a very long statement and I think that the court will understand that this in itself is some kind of political statement.

She says Zuma's lawyers are trying to put the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on trial as much as the NPA is attempting to put Zuma on trial.

The NPA says if this court grants his permanent stay of prosecution, they will in some respects be rewarding those 'Stalingrad tactics' which they blame for the protracted delays in the trial. Zuma's narrative somewhat differs, he says the prosecutors were adamant that he should've been charged with Schabir Shaik and their advice was not heeded by Bulelani Ngcuka.

Zuma is also arguing that the reason for the 10-year delay, caused by the so-called spy tapes litigation is the fault of the NPA.

She says there is a lot that is going to be argued at this trial and it is going to be quite a fight.
