Zuma's lawyer quotes profanity to highlight unfair treatment by NPA

Former president Jacob Zuma applied for a permanent stay of prosecution from 16 charges including of fraud.

EWN political reporter Clement Manyathela describes the events in the Pietermaritzburg court on Monday.

Manyatela reports that Zuma’s advocate Muzi Sikhakhane read excerpts from the so-called spy tapes of a conversation between then Scorpions head Leonard McCarthy and former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Bulelani Ngcuka just a few weeks before the African National Congress' (ANC) 2007 elective conference where Zuma was elected president.

Sikhakhane said the two used profanity to describe judges while plotting about when to charge the former president with corruption and argued that this conduct by an NPA official violated the Constitution.

Zuma's lawyers believe he has been treated extremely unfairly.

The says his name today is synonymous with corruption and he has had to carry this great burden for a very long time...and blame the NPA for the many unreasonable delays to getting this corruption case on trial.

They argued that South Africans' hatred of Zuma has blinded them to the fact that he has been treated unfairly by the NPA, reports Manyathela.
