'Help is just a phone call away' - a lifeline for male survivors of sex assault

Male survivors of sexual abuse are being urged not to suffer the effects of their abuse in isolation.

A support group for survivors, which began in Johannesburg, is now active in Cape Town.

Matrix Men was founded by Martin Pelders, himself a survivor.

Patrick Macdonald is the head of Cape Town branch of Matrixmen and explains why there is a still a stigma attached to male sexual abuse.

It's really hard for men to admit to other people that they have been sexually abused and I think this is why it's not dealt with, people tend to shy away from it.

Patrick Macdonald, Head of Cape Town branch - Matrixmen

Normally it takes up to 27.6 years for a survivor of sexual abuse to report what happened to them to anyone.

Macdonald says the trauma of sexual abuse can manifest in many ways.

A lot of people who have been sexually abused as children never even get to marriage because they have so many problems in relationships, mostly associated with self-worth and shame. Many become drug addicts and prostitutes.

We are here to be just a phone call away. Whatever your story is it's about knowing there is a safe, non-judgemental space for you to tell your story.
