'MPs conduct over the last few years has been shameful' -political expert

As Parliament officially opened on Wednesday and MPs were sworn in, one leading political analyst says its high time politicians began working for the good of the country rather than their own personal interests.

One hopes that parliamentarians do their jobs because their conduct over the last few years has been outrightly shameful.

University of Johannesburg Prof. Mcebisi Ndletyana has slammed the behaviour of MPs who he says have prioritized their own self-interest over the collective good of the republic.

He was speaking to Africa Melane just hours after parliamentarians took their oath of public office to serve in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the country waits to hear who President Cyril Ramaphosa will appoint as deputy president.

On Wednesday the swearing-in of David Mabuza was postponed at his request after allegations of bringing the party into disrepute.

Two women are said to be in the running for the position. Higher education minister Naledi Pandor and outgoing minister in the presidency, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

She's (NDZ) a dedicated person and hardworking, very loyal to the ANC, so she would bring that competence and work ethic into the presidency.

And of course bring the other side of the faction, who perhaps may not be convinced by Cyril, behind the president.
