'If you want to clear your name, why would you postpone your swearing-in?'

Analyst Melanie Verwoerd says she is not convinced that the deputy president, David Mabuza postponed his swearing-in as a Member Parliament in order to clear his name.

On Wednesday morning, President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement saying Mabuza had requested a postponement of his swearing-in to deal with the party's integrity commission’s report, which said he had prejudiced the integrity of the organisation and brought it into disrepute.

Verwoerd shares her thoughts with 702's Bongani Bingwa.

If you want to clear your name, why would you postpone your swearing in? Why don't you use your position as a vehicle to help in that? Which is what Mabuza has been doing, every time he is challenged in Parliament during question time, he would use that platform to say it is not true, come and show me the evidence.

She says there could be other reasons behind the postponement such as Mabuza not being well.

The one thing is that we consistently hear that he is not well and that he has been sick and that maybe he needs a little bit of a breather to figure out whether he can manage.

Alternatively, there may have been pressure from higher up about the consistent rumours around him and he is choosing to take the initiative rather than be pushed out, she says.

Verwoed says the question remains whether Ramaphosa will fill the deputy president position now or leave it vacant for a period of time.
