Kenny Motsamai sworn in to NCOP

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng returned to Parliament on Thursday to swear in members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

Amos Masondo was elected as chairperson with former Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas appointed as his deputy.

The session also saw former Pan Africanist Congress freedom fighter and political prisoner Kenny Motsamai sworn in.

Motsamai was convicted for killing a white traffic officer in Rustenburg in 1989 and served nearly 28 years behind bars for the murder.

The EFF had previously said they wanted Motsamai's criminal record expunged ahead of sending him to the NCOP.

The chief justice gave a bit of a lecture to the members explaining why Kenny Motsamai can be sworn in as a member of the NCOP.

Because his conviction happened in the 1980s...and the Constitution, as it stands, doesn't work retrospectively.

There were absolutely no objections from any of the members of the NCOP.

Ndenze explains that the next step for Parliament is the election of chairpersons for the various parliamentary committees.

However, he says it's likely the number of committees will be significantly reduced after the president announces his new, reconfigured government.

We are expecting fewer departments and fewer ministers and fewer deputy ministries so we'll most likely have fewer committees in Parliament.
