New Western Cape Cabinet a 'safe' option for the DA, says political analyst

It was a case of something old and something new as Western Cape Premier Alan Winde on Thursday revealed his new provincial Cabinet.

Among the familiar faces, Debbie Schafer who returns to the education portfolio and Anton Bredell who remains MEC for local government.

Tertius Simmers takes on the role of human settlements MEC, while Albert Fritz moves from social development to community safety.

Political analyst Asanda Ngoasheng joined Africa Melane to unpack the Western Cape's new provincial leadership.

I think that the DA wanted to go safe and that's why they retained the majority of the cabinet members.

Asanda Ngoasheng, Political analyst

Ngoasheng says historically DA MEC's in the province have produced mixed results.

If you look at education, for example, Debbie Schafer has done a very good job, but she has not been able to deal with issues of lack of diversity in Western Cape schools.

Asanda Ngoasheng, Political analyst

She adds that the success of Winde as premier does not solely rely on his Cabinet, but rather on how the DA operates in the Western Province as a whole.

The Western Cape is a great province if you happen to be white and if you happen to have access to capital. But if you happen to be black and you happen to be poor you find that the Western Cape is really a traumatic and brutal place to be.
