Minister Patricia de Lille describes getting 'the call' from the president

Public Works is a department that has been plagued with corruption, and the appointment of someone outside of the ANC ranks with a history of corruption-busting hailing back to the arms deal expose might be a smart move on Ramaphosa's part.

Newly elected Minister of Public Works Infrastructure Patricia de Lille talks to Kieno Kammies about her appointment.

When the call came from the president yesterday to come to see him, at about 3 in the afternoon, I did not know what was waiting for me.

She served on the presidential infrastructure coordinating committee when she was mayor of Cape Town and sees she has experience in this area

It was clear, even after the CSIR report came out, that there was a backlog of infrastructure and also of maintenance and repair of infrastructure.

She believes there are great opportunities for this department to create the conditions conducive for economic growth by ensuring proper infrastructure is in place.

She says she will be back in Cape Town on Thursday.

We need to hit the ground sprinting, not just running, as there is so much work to do.
