State Capture Inquiry

Former ANN7 editor tells of Jacob Zuma's involvement at the channel

Former Gupta-owned ANN7 news editor Rajesh Sundaram took the stand at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture on Monday.

Sundaram, from India, told the commission that he didn't have to physically go and apply for a visa to work in South Africa as it was processed very quickly.

Nicholas Bouwer on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to EWN reporter Clement Manyathela who is following this story.

(Sundaram) says he sent his details to former Sahara Computers CEO Ashu Chawla and the visa was quickly approved. He says he remembered hearing from one of the Gupta brothers to send his details to Chawla, who would then speak to the president who would then talk to officials at the Department of Home Affairs to expedite that process.

Manyathela says what is shocking is that Sundaram has told the commission that even though it was Duduzane Zuma who was a director at Infinity Media which owned ANN7, it was actually Jacob Zuma who was heavily involved in the processes and day-to-day running of the TV station.

He recalled a meeting he attended in Pretoria where former president Zuma was briefed about the branding of the company. He also says the staff even called Zuma 'Number 9', [a code that was given to Zuma when he was part of the ANC intelligence during apartheid].
