Council on Higher Education recommends LLB curriculum reforms

According to a report by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), many institutions teaching the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) should reform the curriculum.

Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show speaks to CHE chief executive officer professor Narend Baijnath.

This report is the end stage of a process that started several years ago. In 2017 the first findings were reported and subsequently, institutions were given feedback. Each institution that had shortcomings had to produce an improvement plan.

He says in November 2018, improvement plans were accepted and satisfied the higher education quality committee.

So all the institutions now offering the programme have passed masters and have full accreditation for the programmes.

Narend Baijnath, CEO - CHE

Baijnath adds that the primary consideration in most of the programmes was that they had to be aligned with principles of transformative constitutionalism and that is critical as South Africa has been a constitutional democracy for more than two decades.

The particular focus in the review was that the programme had to be sensitive to this and see the Constitution as a primary instrument of transformation in our society.
