'ANCYL national exec committee no longer has constitutional mandate to lead'

African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) marched to the party's headquarters on Tuesday, demanding the disbandment of the ANCYL national executive committee (NEC).

To discuss the march, Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to youth league member Zuko Godlimpi.

Our concern is that the ANCYL NEC no longer has the constitutional mandate to lead the youth league at this point. They are in no position to convene the national congress of the youth league for two reasons. Firstly, ANCYL NEC's term lapsed in September 2018 and constitutionally they should have vacated office. Secondly, the majority of officials are now members of Parliament.

Zuko Godlimpi, Member - ANCYL

Godlimpi says they came to Luthuli House to appeal to the party's leadership to abide by the constitution of the youth league and the ANC.

We are appealing to the leadership of the ANC to extend the stability that is in the party into the youth league. We have always maintained that the party cannot maintain its stability if it doesn't have a coherent, efficient ANCYL.

Zuko Godlimpi, Member - ANCYL

He says the youth league has been moribund for the past seven years.

The youth league under this leadership is in no position of convening its own national congress.
