'Krugersdorp cult members wanted to use wrong body to claim pension, insurance'

The case surrounding a series of murders linked to what appears to be cult called Electus Per Deus is continuing in the South Gauteng High Court.

The group from Krugersdorp is alleged to have murdered 11 people between 2012 and 2016.

They have pleaded not guilty to 32 counts, including murder.

Eyewitness News reporter Kgomotso Modise explains the complexities around the case.

The mastermind in this, Cecila Steyn, who the court have called the kingpin, was called the bride of Satan. It is unclear what her duty or her role in this group would be but it does seem that she was leading these people.

The mother of one of the victims, Jared Jackson, told Modise that she is hit hard by the murder of her son and that the group needs to go away for a very long time.

The court has heard how Jackson's murder was supposed to be used to get money from his life insurance.

What came out in court was that he was not killed because he was part of the group but because he was supposed to be staged as someone else who was part of the group, a gentleman named Zak Valentine who is also standing trial and has been found guilty. So his body was supposed to be used to be that of Zak and they were supposed to get the pension payout and insurance money.

The court has tried to find out the motives but it does seem that these people are keeping their cards close to their chests, not wanting to reveal anything and standing by their word that they are not guilty of all 32 charges.
