[LISTEN] Vinyl records making a return and competing with digital downloads

There has been a global shift back to celebrating music through the form of records, with music lovers creating a culture around the vinyl.

In 2017 the Recording Industry Association of America released data on music sales, saying for the first time since 2011 physical albums outsold digital downloads.

Benjy Mudie owns what is described as Johannesburg's best-kept secret for vinyl record addicts, Vinyl Junkie in Blairgowrie.

He sat down to talk to Azania Mosaka about the history of the vinyl business and how it has evolved over time.

Mudie says the medium is still on the rise.

When you went to somebody's house to listen to music, you used to carry record cases full of records. Vinyl weighs a ton.

It is never going go go back to what it used to be but I think the encouraging thing is that the audience is getting younger for vinyl and young independent artists are releasing on vinyl and digital.

He describes the nostalgia attached to his love for the vinyl record and says his appreciation for them stems from the audio quality and artwork.

Back then, you listened to an entire album over and over until it became an old friend to you. For me, it is partially the audio quality.
