'I take the blame for Alex demolitions as the Joburg city accounting officer'

Johannesburg city manager Ndivhoniswa Lukhwareni has taken responsibility for the demolition of properties in Alexandra.

The Red Ants destroyed 80 illegal structures last week, leaving scores of people without shelter.

On Wednesday, Lukhwareni appeared before the South African Human Rights Commission inquiry into the socio-economic conditions of the township, to answer questions surrounding the evictions.

According to Eyewitness News reporter Edwin Ntshidi, Lukhwareni says while he takes full responsibility as the accounting officer, he has no knowledge of who authorised the court order.

He explained to us that anything happening in the city, whether a meter has been broken, he is the one who is basically at the helm of the administration of the city. He said in the hearings that he is taking responsibility because he is the city manager.

Ntshidi says the media has tried to get more details from Lukhwareni but he insists the matter will be subject to an investigation.

He says it will be a matter of investigation.
