For some kids violence becomes a way to prove a point, says academic

In light of Forest High School murder, Joanne Joseph thought it important to revisit a conversation with Ugandan academic and University of the Sacred Heart vice-chancellor, Dr Jino Mwaba who feels that the definition for a child soldier should be expanded to include children who are exposed to violence daily.

Mwaba says a child's exposure to violence should be considered when they become perpetrators.

Witnessing someone go through violence, violence becomes something that is tolerable and acceptable. In some instances for those armed kids it becomes a way to prove a point.

And when one is a victim there is a sense of payback...

In the context where there is gangsterism, it becomes a new dynamic where children must identify themselves to their groups and that group becomes their sense of identity.
