[LISTEN] What are the risks associated with brain transplants?

While the idea of a brain transplant has been explored it cannot be done at the moment because it would sever the spinal cord.

This is according to the Naked scientist Chris Smith.

Smith says if you took the brain out, the person receiving the brain may contract locked in syndrome.

You could potentially move a brain into a new body but they would not be able to feel or hear anything but you could certainly say that person could be made conscious in a new body.

Chris Smith, Naked scientist

He says locked in syndrome would be a very high price to pay.

People are talking about perhaps in the future - if a person ends up with a lot of health problems maybe we will be able to do a brain transplant but at the moment the price of doing that would be what we dub locked in syndrome and that would be a very high price to pay.
