District Six: Museum campaigns to give Zonnebloem back its original name

A campaign is underway, spearheaded by the District Six Museum, to change Zonnebloem in Cape Town back to District Six.

The name Zonnebloem was introduced during apartheid when the Group Areas Act declared the area whites-only and forcibly removed over 60 000 residents.

District Six Museum director Bonita Bennett says re-instating the name District Six would be a step towards healing the pain of the past.

This whole pain of erasure is such a deep, deep wound that people, as part of restitution, are hoping to heal.

Bonita Bennett, Director - District Six Musuem

On the one hand, all the time and energy, the cost of changing maps and official documents made us think twice about whether this was something, with limited resources, you want to campaign for, but given the importance to people, we decided it was worth the investment.
