[LISTEN] Highs and lows of Joe Public co-founder's personal journey

Joe Public's co-founder and group chief creative officer Pepe Marais has experienced highs and lows in his career, as well as his personal life.

In a book published last year, he shared the process of rebuilding what is now a top South African advertising agency after going bankrupt in 2009.

'Growing Greatness: A Journey Towards Personal and Business Mastery' also delves into Marais's early years.

He says, without ignoring his own privilege, he wrote the book to show people that despite our varying backgrounds, we all face challenges.

Marais sat down with Azania Mosaka to share more on his personal journey - the work he's had to do on himself and how he navigated a difficult childhood with a 'dysfunctional' father.

It is so interesting the courage that it takes to start working on our inner selves. We spend an immense amount of energy almost looking outside of ourselves for solutions, but they reside within us.

I suppose it started with work that I started doing myself 12 years ago. It took going out of business and almost losing my relationship and health, to actually go deep into myself.

There is damage within each of us at various degrees that is caused mainly between the ages of zero to seven and of you unlock it, you can unlock your true potential.

Thinking back, says Marais, he's acknowledged the context of his father's upbringing.

Back in that era, people did not do self-help, you just grin and bear it. So it is so complex.
