'When we got to halfway point, I was on record pace, I took the chance'

South African runner Gerda Steyn has won the 94th Comrades Marathon that took place on Sunday.

Steyn broke the up run record that was previously held by Elena Nurgalieva of 6.09.24 in 2004 by a warping 5.58.53 which was 10 minutes faster.

In the 2018 Comrades Marathon, she finished second.

Ray White, standing in for Bongani Bingwa speaks to Steyn about her win.

I woke up ok this morning, I managed to get out of bed, but I have to say that I think it is the adrenalin that is still in my body. I think tomorrow I will struggle to wake up. Last year I finished in second place, and that was bittersweet for me. This year, I wanted to win.

She adds that she opened a significant gap quite early on in the race and felt reasonably comfortable in that lead.

She says she had not planned to break the record at the start.

I promised myself that I would wait until at least halfway to judge as to whether I am in the right form or right place to break the record. It happened exactly like that, I tried to take it in, I acknowledged the crowd and when we got to the halfway point, I realised that I was on record pace and I decided it was my chance.
