Cape Town safety MEC wants special unit deployed to gang-ravaged areas

Following a spate of killings in Cape Town last week, Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz says gangsterism is evident in all townships.

The MEC has called on the anti-gang unit in the South African Police Service (Saps) to be deployed in traditionally black townships as well instead of just in coloured townships.

Nickolaus Bauer on the Xolani Gwala Show speaks to the MEC on his stance.

What we have seen are the spread of very young gangs emerging. You find that the gangs in Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Crossroads are different from gangs in coloured townships.

He says he is asking for the corporation by the police so that everyone can work together and curb the scourge of crime in the province.
