JOBURG WASTE5

What must SA do to avoid turning into a global dumping ground?

Last month 187 countries took a major step forward in curbing the global plastic waste crisis by adding plastic to the Basel Convention.

The convention was adopted in 1989 and controls the movement of hazardous waste from one country to another.

But does the recent trend of countries like China and Malaysia restricting the importation of waste mean South Africa is likely to become a dumping ground for other country's trash?

Cape Talk's John Maytham put the question to Professor Linda Godfrey from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

Taking waste in isn't necessarily a bad thing... but obviously we don't want to become a dumping ground like we've seen in South East Asia.

Professor Linda Godfrey, Principal researcher - Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

We've got to be careful, that we don't import at the expense of dealing with our own waste.

Professor Linda Godfrey, Principal researcher - Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

The issue of waste collection is a challenge that all African countries face and unless we can actually improve that, we're going to continue to have this leakage of waste into our environment.
