One in five boys married before turning 15 - Unicef

An estimated 115 million boys and men around the world were married as children according to an in-depth analysis of child grooms conducted by Unicef.

The organisation says 1 in 5 children, or 23 million, were married before the age of 15.

Having gathered data from 82 countries, the study reveals that child marriage among boys is prevalent globally spanning sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.

According to the data, the Central African Republic has the highest prevalence of child marriage among males with 28 percent, followed by Nicaragua (19 percent) and Madagascar (13 percent).

Joanne Joseph spoke to Unicef's Eastern and Southern Africa, Chief of Communication James Elder, to find out more.

It has very similar negative repercussions as for girls in terms of stunting their development, hindering their opportunities and potential.

The domino effect of that is quite simply just to perpetuate poverty in communities.

There is also in a lot of countries where there is this kind of misplaced perception that child marriage will provide protection or reduce poverty.
