Zondo commission will struggle to monitor Parliament's oversight role - analyst

The Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture is set to appoint a task team to investigate whether Parliament properly exercised its oversight role concerning state capture and corruption.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo revealed this on Monday during the evidence of exchange control expert Elijah Mazibuko.

Mazibuku told the commission that even when people were summoned to Parliament to account, they were afraid to do so.

Ray White, standing in for Bongani Bingwa, speaks to Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute public policy specialist and lecturer Kagiso Pooe.

He says for oversight to work, there needs to be political buy-in.

The issue when you look at oversight is that it speaks more to the ethics of the executive than anything else and how are we going to police that when we have done such a poor job over the last two decades.

He says South Africa has not been very kind to whistleblowers.

It is not like people don't have the information when they are in these institutions, but we also have to say once whistleblowing happens, can we look after these people afterwards?
