City of Cape Town responds to recent gang killings in Delft and Hanover Park

Areas like Delft in Cape Town is seeing a rising body count daily, and there signs that the City is working more closely with Saps to bring peace to these gang-ravaged areas.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security at City of Cape Town JP Smith talks to Kieno Kammies about the plans in place.

Smith says over the years the City has adapted its strategy.

if I can take you back to 2006, the City did not touch the gang violence issue. It was somebody else's problem. Since then we have bent a lot of resources towards it.

These include the stabilisation unit, the gang and drug task team, the canine unit, reservist force, neighbourhood watches and management of informants, he explains.

In addition, social programmes for men, women and families have been introduced dealing with social challenges including drugs.

But this past week has seen a spate of gang-related killings on the Cape Flats.

We leave no stone unturned which is why the events of this past weekend are so painful to see so many deaths, especially in Hanover Park and Delft where we have put in so many resources.

He says there was a series of retaliatory killings when gang members were killed. Resources in the area were maximised.
