Glen Marais sub-station explosion causes power outage in Kempton Park

Following damage caused to the Glen Marais sub-station, residents in Kempton Park have been without electricity for several days.

Ray White speaks to City of Ekurhuleni head of department for electricity and energy Mark Wilson to discuss the outages.

The initial cause was a fire on Saturday morning at our main sub-station in Glen Marais which exploded due to cable theft.

He says the recent power outages are not as a result of general maintenance.

The significant problems that the city is experiencing are due to cable theft and third party contractors digging out cables.

Wilson says there is no priority given to specific areas when the power comes back on.

What we do is switch it back on in stages because as you switch on a sub-station, you get massive increases in the load because it was off, therefore you don't want to trip it off again. There is no priority given, as power is repaired, electricity is switched on.

He says the electricity initially was supposed to return on Tuesday, but due to carbon build up because of the fire, the power couldn't be restored.

We managed to clear out the carbon overnight, and as of this morning, four panels have been tested. We are hoping to switch on the electricity later on Wednesday.
