Former NDPP director reveals landing NPA job without due process

Former national director of public prosecutions (NDPP) Mxolisi Nxasana on Wednesday appeared before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture.

He is expected to reveal some of the shady dealings with former president Jacob Zuma and how he landed a job at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

EWN reporter Theto Mahlakoana says Nxasana has so far revealed that his appointment at the NPA came after he had an informal chat with Zuma who then appointed him without any due process.

He told the commission that his security clearance was only applied for months into the position.

Nxasana also detailed his strained relation with the then deputy national director of public prosecution, Nomgcobo Jiba.

It is going to be quite a lengthy day going through the questions which ultimately seeks to answer the questions of whether the NPA was interfered with by external factors and politicians.

Nxasana left his position in May 2015, less than two years after his appointment. He was given a R17 million “golden handshake” to vacate his position by Jacob Zuma.

He was ordered by the Constitutional Court to repay R10 million of the settlement last August, but he claims the money has already been spent.

The Zondo Commission will further hear about the manner in which Nxasana vacated office.
