New EFF and ANC lawmakers almost come to blows during training session

A training session on lawmaking was disrupted on Wednesday when a fight broke out between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament.

The new MPs are undergoing three days of training to prepare them for their new roles.

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Dr Annelie Lotriet chaired the introductory session.

She explains that an EFF member began a second round of questions with an attack on the ANC.

The ANC became quite upset, at which point another member of the EFF switched on her microphone and refused to switch it off, continued to talk, drowning everyone out. Eventually, this was a to-and-fro between the ANC and the EFF.

This member from the EFF crossed over the floor to the ANC, joined by a couple of the EFF members. The ANC then started to retaliate and at that point the speaker had to physically move in between the two groups.

Lotriet says she will write to the speaker and propose that action be taken.

At this point it is a member of the EFF who refused to obey any of my instructions to allow me to do my work as presiding officer. She was the one who crossed the floor and physically wanted to threaten the ANC.
