De Lille commends NGOs for challenging arms deal report in court

Public Works Minister Paricia de Lille has pledged her support for organisations Right2Know and Corruption Watch in their bid to have the findings in the Seriti commission of inquiry into the arms deal reviewed and set aside.

The court application by the organisations comes after Judge Willie Seriti, who headed the commission, exonerated politicians of wrongdoing when he released his report in 2016.

De Lille was the original whistleblower on the arms deal that landed former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni in jail.

She tabled an arms deal dossier in Parliament as a Pan Africanist Congress Member of Parliament in 1999. The dossier also led to the successful prosecution of Schabir Shaik.

It has been almost 20 years now where we have not been able to get to the bottom of these allegations.

I think we all knew from the beginning that the Seriti Commission had a predetermined outcome.

The good side of the story is that the evidence has become part of the record of the high court in Durban, also the Supreme Court of Appeal but if we had done it earlier on, right at the beginning of 1999, government would have sent us a strong message that they will not cover up for corruption. Instead what government did at the time is attack the messengers.
